The Castro County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Dimmitt .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle , about 50 km east of New Mexico and has an area of 2329 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Deaf Smith County , Randall County , Swisher County , Hale County , Lamb County, and Parmer County .
history
Castro County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed in 1891. It was named after Henri Castro (1786-1865), a consul of the Republic of Texas in France, who founded several settlements for French migrants in Texas in the 1840s.

Castro County's population was 8,285 as of the 2000 census . 65 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,761 households and 2,159 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.4 percent white, 2.3 percent African American, 1.2 percent Indian and 19.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.1 percent were from two or more races. 51.7 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,761 households, 40.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 65.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 21.8 percent were non-families. 20.5 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.45 people.
33.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.3 percent between 25 and 44, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,619 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,422. Males had a median income of $ 25,379 versus $ 20,433 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,457. 15.7 percent of families and 19.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
