The Karnes County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Karnes City .

geography

The county is about 200 km southeast of the geographic center of Texas and about 80 km off the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of ​​1952 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gonzales County , DeWitt County , Goliad County , Bee County , Live Oak County , Atascosa County, and Wilson County .

history

Karnes County was formed on February 4, 1854 from parts of Bexar County, DeWitt County, Goliad County, Gonzales County, and San Patricio County. It was named after Henry Wax Karnes (1812–1840), a soldier of the Texas Revolution . Karnes was promoted to colonel in the Texas Army, escaped Mexican custody in 1836 and became a Texas Rangers in 1838 . In 1874, some parts were separated to form Wilson County together with parts of Bexar County.

Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of December 19, 2019, including the Karnes County Courthouse and the Panna Maria Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , Karnes County had 15,446 people in 4,454 households and 3,246 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.55 percent white, 10.79 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 17.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 47.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,454 households, 34.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.6 percent were married couples living together, 13.7 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent were single households and 13.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.15 people.

21.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.5 percent between 18 and 24, 34.2 percent between 25 and 44, 18.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 146.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 162.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,526 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,565. Males had a median income of $ 27,260 versus $ 19,367 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,603. 18.5 percent of families and 21.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
