The Lavaca County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Hallettsville .

geography

The county is located in southeast Texas and is approximately 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of ​​2513 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Fayette County , Colorado County , Jackson County , Victoria County , DeWitt County, and Gonzales County .

history

Lavaca County was formed on April 6, 1846 from parts of Colorado County, Fayette County, Gonzales County, Jackson County, and Victoria County. The administrative organization was completed six years later. It was named after the Lavaca River . This originally had the French name Les Veches ("The Cows") after the bison in the region.

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 15, 2020, including the Lavaca County Courthouse , Lay-Bozka House, and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church .

According to the 2000 census , Lavaca County had 19,210 people in 7,669 households and 5,391 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.86 percent white, 6.79 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.84 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,669 households, 30.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers and 29.7 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent were single households and 16.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

24.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,132 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,760. Males had a median income of $ 26,988 versus $ 17,537 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,398. 10.2 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
