The Jim Wells County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Alice .

geography

The county is located in southeast Texas, about 60 km to the east from the Gulf of Mexico and about 90 km to the southwest from Mexico . It has an area of ​​2249 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Live Oak County , San Patricio County , Nueces County , Kleberg County , Brooks County, and Duval Counties .

history

Jim Wells County was formed from parts of Nueces County on March 25, 1911 and the administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after James Babbage Wells Jr. (1850-1923), a lawyer in Brownsville who defended Spanish and Mexican land titles in South Texas.

One site in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of December 6, 2019, the Hinojosa Site .

According to the 2000 census , Jim Wells County had 39,326 people in 12,961 households and 10,096 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.90 percent white, 0.60 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 17.93 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 75.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.45 people.

The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 28,843 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,616. Males had a median income of $ 30,266 versus $ 17,190 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,252. 20.1 percent of families and 24.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
