The Sutton County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Sonora .

geography

The county is located about 25 miles west of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​3767 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Schleicher County , Kimble County , Edwards County , Val Verde County, and Crockett County .

history

Sutton County was formed in 1887 from parts of Crockett County. It was named after John Schuyler Sutton , a Texas ranger and soldier in the Texas Revolution and an officer in the American Civil War.

As of the 2000 census , Sutton County had 4,077 people in 1,515 households and 1,145 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.28 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian and 22.27 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 51.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,515 households, 38.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 63.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 24.4 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.15 people.

28.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 96 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,385 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,143. Males had a median income of $ 31,193 versus $ 18,587 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,105. 14.1 percent of families and 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
