The county is located in northern Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , on the Oklahoma border and has an area of ​​2,414 square kilometers, which is without any significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Beaver Counties and Ellis Counties in Oklahoma, Hemphill Counties and Ochiltree Counties in Texas.

history

Lipscomb County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on June 6, 1887. It was named after Abner Smith Lipscomb (1789-1856). Lipscomb fought in the Creek War of 1813/14, was a member of the State Legislature of the Alabama Territory, and then until 1835 a judge at the Alabama Supreme Court . In 1839/40 he served as Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas and was a judge at the Texas Supreme Court from 1846 to 1856.

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 16, 2020, the Lipscomb County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Lipscomb County had 3,057 people in 1,205 households and 845 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.9 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 1.4 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 13.0 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. 20.7 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,205 households, 32.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 62.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers, and 29.8 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent were single households and 16.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06 people.

27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,964 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,375. Males had a median income of $ 28,750 versus $ 20,034 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,328. 12.9 percent of families and 16.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
