The Edwards County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Rocksprings .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas and is approximately 25 miles from Mexico . It has an area of ​​5491 square kilometers, without any significant water surface. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Sutton County , Kimble County , Kerr County , Real County , Kinney County, and Val Verde Counties .

history

Edwards County was formed from parts of Bexar County on February 1, 1858 , and the administrative organization was completed on April 10, 1883. It was named after Haden Edwards (1771-1849), one of the first Anglo-American settlers in Nacogdoches County and leader of the Fredonian Rebellion .

The Edwards County Courthouse is one of the county's buildings on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of February 7, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Edwards County had 2,162 people in 801 households and 586 families. The population density was 0.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.26 percent white, 0.79 percent African American, 0.79 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 12.72 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.31 percent were descended from two or more races. 45.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 801 households, 31.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers and 26.8 percent were non-families. 24.7 percent were single households and 13.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.20 people.

28.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.5 percent between 18 and 24, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44, 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 98.2 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,298 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,083. Males had a median income of $ 21,912 versus $ 14,907 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,691. 24.6 percent of families and 31.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
