history
Bexar County was founded on March 17, 1836. It encompassed almost the entire western part of the Republic of Texas , including the disputed areas of eastern New Mexico . After the end of sovereignty, 128 counties were established on its territory.
The county takes its name from its capital, then called San Antonio de Béxar. This formed one of 23 municipalities (cities with self-government / administrative sub-units) of Texas at the time of its independence. San Antonio de Béxar - originally Villa de San Fernando de Béxar - was the first civilian government formed in the province of Texas under Spanish rule. The city was founded in 1731 by 55 Canary Islands residents near the system of missions along the San Antonio River . The new settlement was named after the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar, the Spanish military base that protected the missions. The Presidio, which was located near San Pedro Springs, was founded in 1718 and named after the New Spanish viceroy Baltasar de Zúñiga y Guzmán , the second son of the Duke of Béxar (a city in Spain ).
Eight places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . Below is the Mission Concepcion , which forms the San Antonio Missions with other historical buildings . This ensemble of buildings is a World Heritage Site in the United States of America . 143 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 1, 2018).
