The Milam County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Cameron .

geography

The county is located approximately 100 km east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2,646 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Falls County , Robertson County , Burleson County , Lee County , Williamson County, and Bell County .

history

Milam County was formed as the original county on March 17, 1836. The administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after Benjamin Rush Milam (1788-1835), who fought in the British-American War and traded with the Comanches . He helped found a colony in Texas and was a soldier at the beginning of the Texas Revolution . He was actively involved in the Mexican and later the Texan War of Independence . He fell during the siege of Béxar.

Five structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 19, 2020, including the Milam County Courthouse and Jail , which Dr. Nathan and Lula Cass House and the International & Great Northern Railroad Passenger Depot .

As of the 2000 census , Milam County had 24,238 people in 9,199 households and 6,595 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.89 percent white, 11.05 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 7.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.63 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,199 households, 32.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.3 percent were single mothers and 28.3 percent were non-families. 25.9 percent were single households and 14.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.11 people.

27.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,186 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,431. Males had a median income of $ 30,149 versus $ 20,594 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,920. 12.2 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
