Cameron is the district capital and county seat of Milam County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in east Texas, near the county center, about 200 km northwest of Houston , 100 km northeast of Austin at the junction of US Highways 77 and 190 , and has a total area of 11.0 km 2 with no significant water surface.

According to the 2000 census, 5,634 people in 2,090 households and 1,404 families lived here. The population density was 513.0 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 66.68% White, 20.66% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 10.17% other ethnic groups. About 1.72% were mixed race and 26.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,090 households, 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.9% of them were married couples living together. 17.2% were single mothers and 32.8% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.25.
28.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.0% 18 to 24, 23.3% 25 to 44, 19.7% 45 to 64, and 20.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 86.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 79.9 men.
