The Gregg County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Longview .

geography

The county northeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 40 km from Louisiana , 60 km from Arkansas and 80 km from Oklahoma . It has an area of ​​716 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Upshur County , Harrison County , Rusk County, and Smith County .

history

Gregg County was formed on April 12, 1873 from parts of Upshur County. It was named after John Gregg (1828–1864), a judge at a district court and delegate to the Provisional Confederate Congress . He served as Brigadier General during the Civil War and died in the Battle of Fort Harrison in October 1864 .

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 7, 2019).

According to the 2000 census , Gregg County had 111,379 people in 42,687 households and 29,667 families. The population density was 157 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.89 percent white, 19.86 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 0.68 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 4.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 42,687 households, 33.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 52.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers and 30.5 percent were non-families. 26.1 percent were single households and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06 people.

26.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,006 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,617. Males had a median income of $ 33,186 versus $ 21,432 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,449. 12.0 percent of families and 15.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
