The Grayson County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Sherman .

geography

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas and borders Oklahoma to the north . It has an area of ​​2536 square kilometers, 118 square kilometers of which are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fannin County , Collin County , Denton County , Cooke County, and in Oklahoma by the counties: Love County , Marshall County, and Bryan Counties .

history

Grayson County was formed in 1846 from parts of Fannin County. It was named after Peter Wagener Grayson (1788-1838), an Attorney General of the Republic of Texas .

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 6, 2019, including the birthplace of President Eisenhower .

According to the 2000 census , Grayson County had 110,595 people; 42,849 households and 30,208 families were counted. The population density was 46 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.20 percent white, 5.85 percent African American, 1.31 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.13 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.80 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

25.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,178 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,048. Males had a median income of $ 32,998 versus $ 23,414 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,862. 8.4 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
