Denison is a city in Grayson County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the northeast of the county, in northeast Texas, on the border with Oklahoma and has a total area of 59.3 km², of which 0.8 km² is water.
history
The place was founded in 1872 as a depot of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad and named after the former US MP and politician George Denison . In 1901 the first interurban tram was established in Texas between Denison and Sherman .

According to the 2000 census, 22,773 people lived here in 9,185 households and 6,135 families. The population density was 389.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 84.02% White, 8.62% African American, 1.67% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 2.19% other ethnic groups. About 2.98% were mixed race and 5.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,185 households, 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1% of these were married couples living together. 14.4% were single mothers and 33.2% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
24.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8% 18 to 24, 26.7% 25 to 44, 22.4% 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 88.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,474 USD , and the median income for a family 39,820 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,459 versus $ 21,451 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,685. 14.7% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.8% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.8% were 65 or older.
