Denver City is a city in Yoakum County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the south of the county, in west Texas, is about 15 km from New Mexico and has a total area of 6.5 km 2 without any significant body of water.
history
The place was founded in 1939 by CS Ameen and Ben Eggink after oil was found in the area. Just one year later the city had 3,000 residents and 120 shops. The oil boom subsided as early as 1943, and the town had around 2,000 inhabitants in 1944 and 1,750 in 1945. However, Denver City remained an important supply point for the surrounding oil fields and the region's ranchers. At the beginning of the 1950s the place began to grow again, from 1,858 inhabitants in 1952 the population rose to 3,800 in 1955. The town experienced its economic peak in the 1970s and 1980s with a renewed oil boom. After the boom ended, the population fell from 5,251 in 1990 to 3,985 in 2000.
The place has a public library, a hospital, a radio station and a twice-weekly newspaper.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 3,985 people lived here in 1,366 households and 1,102 families. The population density was 615.4 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 68.38% White, 1.53% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 27.60% other ethnic groups. About 1.51% were mixed race and 47.15% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,366 households, 44.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.7% of these were married couples living together. 9.5% were single mothers and 19.3% were non-families. 18.1% of all households were single households and 9.3% had people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.29 people.
31.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9% 18 to 24, 26.3% 25 to 44, 21.3% 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 91.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 86.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 29,418 USD , and the median income for a family 35,972 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,156 versus $ 15,476 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,921. 19.2% of the population and 18.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.7% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.3% were 65 or older.
