The county is located in northwest Texas, bordering New Mexico to the west and has an area of 2071 square kilometers, with no significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cochran Counties , Terry Counties , Gaines Counties , and Lea Counties in New Mexico.

history

Yoakum County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Henderson King Yoakum , a soldier, prosecutor, and important figure in Texan history.
