The Brewster County is the geographically largest county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Alpine .

geography

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas and borders Mexico to the south and southeast . It has an area of ​​16,039 square kilometers, there is no significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pecos County , Terrell County , Presidio County, and Jeff Davis Counties .

history

Brewster County was formed on February 2, 1887 from parts of Presidio County. It was named after Henry Percy Brewster (1816-1884), a Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas and later Chief of Staff under Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston .

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Brewster County had 8,866 people; 3,669 households and 2,216 families were counted. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.09 percent white, 1.22 percent African American, 0.85 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 43.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,669 households, 26.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 46.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers and 39.6 percent were non-families. 32.8 percent were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.96 people.

22.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.8 percent between 18 and 24, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,386 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,962. Males had a median income of $ 26,934 versus $ 21,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,183. 12.6 percent of families and 18.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
