The Refugio County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Refugio .

The county is located in southeast Texas, about 30 km off the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2120 square kilometers, of which 125 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Victoria County , Calhoun County , Aransas County , San Patricio County , Bee County, and Goliad Counties .

history

Refugio County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after the Nuestra Señora del Refugio Mission near what later became the county.

According to the 2000 census , Refugio County's 7,828 people lived in 2,985 households and 2,176 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.22 percent white, 6.77 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 44.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,985 households, 31.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07 people.

26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 and 24, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,986 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,162. Males had a median income of $ 29,667 versus $ 16,565 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,481. 14.3 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
