The Upshur County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Gilmer .

geography

The county is located in southeast Texas and is approximately 50 km north of Oklahoma and east of Arkansas . It has an area of ​​1535 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Camp County , Morris County , Marion County , Harrison County , Gregg County , Smith County, and Wood County .

history

Upshur County was formed in 1846 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after Abel Parker Upshur , the 15th United States Secretary of State.

According to the 2000 census , Upshur County had 35,291 people in 13,290 households and 10,033 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.70 percent white, 10.15 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.17 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.95 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,347 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,857. Males had a median income of $ 31,216 versus $ 20,528 for females. The per capita income was 16,358. 14.9 percent of the population and 12.3 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
