history

Armstrong County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on March 8, 1890. It was named after one of Texas' six pioneering families.

10,000 years ago the Panhandle was inhabited by Paleo-Indians . The Apaches came to this area around 1700 , then the Comanche . After they moved on, some Kiowa and Cheyenne lived here . Anglo-American settlers didn't come to this area until around 1780. In 1874 there was the first great battle on the Red River and the battle in Palo Duro Canyon . Both battles took place on the county line with Randall County. After the devastating defeat of the Indians, the first ranchers came to the country. In 1876, Charles Goodnight brought a herd of 1,600 cattle into Palo Duro Canyon. In 1877 he entered into a partnership with the Irish John G. Adair. Both ranches together then had an area of 1.335 million acres. Both ranches dominated the area well into the 20th century.

In 1887 the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway built a railway line through the county, which thus had a direct connection to New Mexico and Colorado and new settlers came to the area. In 1900 there were 1,205 people in the county. In 1930 the county had its highest population at 3,329. Since then it has been falling again, initially due to the Depression, then due to the dismantling of farm workers who were replaced by machines.
