The Oldham County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Vega .

geography

The county is located in northwest Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , borders New Mexico to the west and is approximately 80 km from Oklahoma to the north . It has an area of ​​3889 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hartley County , Potter County , Deaf Smith County, and Quay County in New Mexico.

history

Oldham County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on June 12, 1881. It was named after the politician and lawyer Williamson Simpson Oldham . He was first a member of the Arkansas State Legislature and a judge on the state's Supreme Court before moving to Texas in 1849. During the Civil War he was a member of the Senate of the Confederate States of America .

12 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 27, 2020, with the archaeological site Landergin Mesa has the status of a National Historic Landmark .

According to the 2000 census , Oldham County had 2,185 people in 735 households and 565 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.66 percent white, 1.88 percent African American, 1.28 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian and 4.62 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 735 households, 35.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 66.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 23.0 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.02 people.

35.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 108.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the 33,713 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 39,091 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,845 versus $ 20,185 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,806. 10.5 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
