The Hansford County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Spearman . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located north of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle on the Oklahoma border and has an area of ​​2,384 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Texas County in Oklahoma, Ochiltree County , Roberts County , Hutchinson County, and Sherman County .

history

Hansford County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. The administrative organization was completed on March 11, 1889. It was named after John M. Hansford (? –1844), a member of the State Legislature of the Republic of Texas and a district judge. He was killed by regulators during the Regulator-Moderator Wars .

The Hansford County Courthouse is one of the county's buildings on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 5, 2019).

According to the 2000 census , Hansford County had 5,369 people in 2,005 households and 1,489 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.88 percent white, 0.04 percent African American, 0.75 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian and 17.47 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.48 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,005 households, 36.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 65.0 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers, and 25.7 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14 people.

29.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,438 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,281. Males had a median income of $ 29,022 versus $ 17,668 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,408. 12.0 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
