The Kinney County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Brackettville .

geography

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas, in the southwest on the border with Mexico and has an area of ​​3,356 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Edwards County , Uvalde County , Maverick County, and Val Verde Counties .

history

Kinney County was formed on January 28, 1850 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on February 7, 1874. It was named after Henry Lawrence Kinney , a land speculator, suspected smuggler, and founder of Corpus Christi . He was a member of the State Legislature of the Republic of Texas and the Texas Senate . He gave up trying to found a colony in Nicaragua under pressure from the United States and returned to the State Legislature, which he left again in 1861 as an opponent of secession .

In the county, southerners committed the 1862 Nueces River massacre of German-born Texans during the Civil War .

Two locations in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 13, 2020, the Kinney County Courthouse and the Fort Clark Historic District .

After the census in 2000 3,379 people lived in Kinney County. 23 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,314 households and 940 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.8 percent white, 1.7 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 18.6 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.4 percent were from two or more races. 50.5 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,314 households, 27.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.4 percent were single mothers and 28.4 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent were single households and 16.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.10 people.

25.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.3 percent between 18 and 24, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 24.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,320 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,045. Males had a median income of $ 26,422 versus $ 16,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,350. 19.2 percent of families and 24.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
