The McMullen County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Tilden .

geography

The county is located in southern Texas, about 70 km to the southwest from Mexico and about 100 km to the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of ​​2959 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Atascosa County , Live Oak County , Duval County, and La Salle Counties .

history

McMullen County was formed on February 1, 1858 from parts of Atascosa County, Bexar County, and Live Oak County. The administrative organization was completed in 1877. It was named after John McMullen (1785-1853), who founded a colony of Irish settlers in Texas, Mexico in 1828 . In 1836 he was a member of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Texas. On January 20, 1853, he was killed in an assassination attempt.

One site in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 18, 2020, the Mustang Branch Site .

According to the 2000 census , McMullen County had 851 people; 355 households and 238 families were counted. The population density was 0 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.4 percent white, 1.2 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American and 8.9 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. 33.1 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 355 households, 25.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.6 percent were single mothers, and 32.7 percent were non-families. 30.7 percent were single households and 14.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.01 people.

23.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24, 23.7 percent between 25 and 44, 28.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 years or over there were 105.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,500 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,417. Males had a median income of $ 26,953 versus $ 20,982 for females. The per capita income was 22,258. 20.7 percent of the population 15.9 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
