The Duval County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in San Diego .
geography
The county is south of the geographic center of Texas and about 60 km to the west from Mexico . In the east it is about 80 km to the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 4651 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: McMullen County , Live Oak County , Jim Wells County , Brooks County , Jim Hogg County, and Webb Counties .
history
Duval County was formed on February 1, 1858 from parts of Live Oak County, Nueces County and Starr Counties , and the administrative organization was completed on November 7, 1876. The background of the naming is not fully clarified. The name could go back to one of the three Duval brothers Burr H., John Crittenden or Thomas Howard, or all three. Burr H. DuVal was an officer during the Texas Revolution and died in the Goliad massacre . John Crittenden Duval was a Texas Ranger and author. Thomas Howard Duval was a federal judge and Secretary of State of Texas from 1851 to 1855 .

According to the 2000 census , Duval County had 13,120 people. 584 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,350 households and 3,266 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.22 percent white, 0.54 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 15.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.11 percent were from two or more races. 87.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,350 households, 36.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.2 percent were married, cohabiting couples, 16.8 percent were single mothers and 24.9 percent were non-families. 22.9 percent were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.40 people.
29.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 102.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,416 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,014. Males had a median income of $ 25,601 versus $ 16,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,324. 23.0 percent of families and 27.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
