The Delta County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Cooper . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas and about 45 km to the north from the state of Oklahoma . It has an area of 720 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lamar County , Hopkins County , Hunt County and Fannin County .
history
Delta County was formed on July 29, 1870 from parts of Hopkins County and Lamar County. It was named after its triangular shape and thus after the Greek letter Delta .

As of the 2000 census , Delta County had a population of 5,506; 2,094 households and 1,461 families were counted. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.9 percent white, 8.3 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 1.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.1 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,094 households, 30.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, and 30.2 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent were single households and 14.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02 people.
25.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,094 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,925. Males had a median income of $ 31,597 versus $ 20,296 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,080. 14.6 percent of families and 17.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
