The Delta County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Cooper . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas and about 45 km to the north from the state of Oklahoma . It has an area of ​​720 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lamar County , Hopkins County , Hunt County and Fannin County .

history

Delta County was formed on July 29, 1870 from parts of Hopkins County and Lamar County. It was named after its triangular shape and thus after the Greek letter Delta .

As of the 2000 census , Delta County had a population of 5,506; 2,094 households and 1,461 families were counted. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.9 percent white, 8.3 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 1.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.1 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
