The Swisher County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Tulia . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , is 80 km to the west from New Mexico , about 150 km to the north and about 120 km to the east from Oklahoma . It has an area of 2333 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Randall County , Armstrong County , Briscoe County , Floyd County , Hale County, and Castro Counties .
history
Swisher County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County . It was named after James Gibson Swisher , a soldier of the Texas Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Swisher County had 8,378 people in 2,925 households and 2,152 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.75 percent white, 5.85 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 19.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 35.22 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,925 households, 35.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers and 26.4 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent were single households and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15 people.
27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 109.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 111.3 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,846 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,444. Males had a median income of $ 25,164 versus $ 20,448 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,326. 14.2 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
