The county is located in northwest Texas, about 80 km east of the New Mexico border and has an area of 2,314 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lubbock County , Garza County , Borden County , Dawson County, and Terry County .

history

Originally the area was settled by Apaches , who were driven out by the Comanches in the 18th century . In 1873 and 1874, the Comanches suffered their first defeat against the US Army, which gradually drove the Indians out of the area. Lynn County was formed from parts of Garza County on August 21, 1876 and the administrative organization was completed in 1903. It was named after William Lynn (? –1836), a Texan Revolution soldier who fell at the Battle of the Alamo . After buffalo hunters began to hunt on a large scale in 1877, there was another confrontation with the Comanches, who, however, were expelled from the region by the US Army in early 1877. Although the land was released for settlement from 1877, the population remained low. In the early 1880s, the first ranchers settled in the area, mostly in the outskirts of the county. The first ranch in the county was established in 1884, and others followed, but they were mostly small family businesses. The county's population rose from nine in 1880 to 24 in 1890. In 1900 the population had dropped to 19. The county was founded in 1876, but it remained disorganized until 1903. After 1900, farmers poured into the county who drove ranchers out of parts of the country, so the number of farms rose from 5 to 201 between 1900 and 1910 and the population grew from 17 in 1900 to 1713 in 1910.

The increase in population was primarily due to the cultivation of cotton . When more acreage became available for sale in 1912, a large number of people of German origin from Central Texas settled in the county, and a steady immigration of Germans began that lasted into the 1950s. The decline in the price of cotton that began around 1930 hit the smaller farms in particular, and the number of cotton farms fell from 2,138 in 1930 to 1,471 in 1940. After the Second World War, the county's agricultural structure became more diversified, with wheat growing alongside cotton and livestock farming .

When oil was found in the eastern part of the county in the early 1950s, the economic structure of the county changed fundamentally. Due to the 1973 oil crisis, additional oil fields were opened up. Annual oil production in the county reached 800,000 barrels in the mid-1980s .

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 17, 2020, the Lynn County Courthouse .
