The Wharton County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Wharton .

The county is located in southwest Texas, about 50 km off the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2835 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Austin County , Fort Bend County , Brazoria County , Matagorda County , Jackson County , Lavaca County, and Colorado County .

history

Wharton County was formed in 1846 from parts of Colorado County, Jackson County, and Matagorda County. It was named after William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton , two brothers and leaders in the Texan Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Wharton County had 41,188 people in 14,799 households and 10,744 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.01 percent white, 14.95 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.65 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,799 households, 35.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers and 27.4 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.26 people.

The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.7 males.
