El Campo is a city in Wharton County in the US state of Texas .

geography

The city is almost centrally located in the county, in southwest Texas, is in the southwest about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico .

history

In 1882, a railroad workers' camp called Prairie Switch was built on the site of the present city and served in the following years as a reloading point and supply depot for the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway . Mexican cowboys called the camp El Campo . When the first post office was opened in 1890, this name was adopted.

According to the 2000 census, 10,945 people in 3,931 households and 2,810 families lived here. The population density was 565.7 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 69.07% White, 11.88% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 16.66% other ethnic groups. About 1.77% were mixed race and 38.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,931 households, 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1% of these were married couples living together. 13.5% were single mothers and 28.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were single households and there were people living in 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.31 people.

30.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5% 18 to 24, 26.2% 25 to 44, 19.4% 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 92.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 86.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,694 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,155. Males had a median income of $ 27,416 versus $ 18,872 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,464. 20.1% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.1% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.1% were 65 or older.
