The Crane County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Crane .
geography
The county is located west of the geographic center of Texas, about 50 km from the southeasternmost tip of New Mexico , and covers an area of 2035 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Ector County , Upton Counties , Crockett Counties , Pecos Counties , and Ward Counties .
history
Crane County was formed from parts of Tom Green County on February 26, 1887 , and the administrative organization was completed in 1927. It was named after William Carey Crane (1816-1865), a priest and president of Baylor University in Waco .

As of the 2000 census , Crane County had 3,996 people in 1,360 households and 1,082 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.70 percent white, 2.90 percent African American, 0.98 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian and 19.49 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 43.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,360 households, 43.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 67.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers and 20.4 percent were non-families. 18.8 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.35 people.
31.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,194 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,820. Males had a median income of $ 33,438 versus $ 16,806 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,374. 12.4 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
economy
Oil production is the county's most important economic segment. The Waddell Ranch had more than 800 oil wells in 2007. Crane County is one of the largest oil counties in Texas. Approximately 1.5 billion barrels (240,000,000 m³) have been produced since the county's first discovery of oil.
