The county is located approximately 100 km northwest of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​2350 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kent County , Fisher County , Mitchell County , Borden County, and Garza Counties .

history

Scurry County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after William Read Scurry , a lawyer and general in the Confederate Army .

As of the 2000 census , Scurry County had 16,361 people in 5,756 households and 4,161 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.27 percent white, 6.06 percent African American , 0.53 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian and 10.51 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races . 27.77 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,756 households, 33.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05 people.

25.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 107.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 109.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,646 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,467. Males had a median income of $ 30,399 versus $ 18,061 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,871. 12.6 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
