The Sterling County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Sterling City . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located approximately 130 km east of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,392 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Mitchell County , Coke County , Tom Green County , Reagan County , Glasscock County, and Howard Counties .
history
Sterling County was formed in 1891 from parts of Tom Green County. It was named after WS Sterling , an early rancher and buffalo hunter in Texas.

As of the 2000 census , Sterling County had 1,393 people in 513 households and 385 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.71 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 11.84 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.01 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.01 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 513 households, 36.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 64.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers and 24.8 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.15 people.
28.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.1 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 95.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,129 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,813. Males had a median income of $ 28,173 versus $ 19,615 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,972. 13.9 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
