The Dickens County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Dickens .
geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas and is located in the northeast about 80 km from the state of Oklahoma . It has an area of 2344 km², of which 3 km² are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Motley County , King County , Kent County, and Crosby County .
history
Dickens County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on March 14, 1891. It was named after the Englishman J. Dickens , who died as a Texas freedom fighter at the Battle of Alamo . One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 23, 2018, the Dickens County Courthouse and Jail .

As of the 2000 census , Dickens County had 2,762 people in 980 households and 638 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.62 percent white, 8.18 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.25 percent from the Pacific island area and 12.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 23.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 980 households, 23.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers and 34.8 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent were single households and 17.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
18.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 130.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 141.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,898 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,500. Males had a median income of $ 25,000 versus $ 18,571 for women. The per capita income was $ 13,156. 14.1 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
