The Winkler County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Kermit .
geography
The county is located in west Texas, borders the southeastern tip of New Mexico and has an area of 2,179 square kilometers, with no significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Andrews County , Ector County , Ward County , Loving County, and Lea Counties in New Mexico.
history
Winkler County was formed in 1887 from parts of Tom Green County . It was named after Clinton McKamy Winkler , a judge and colonel of the Confederate States of America .

According to the 2000 census , Winkler County had 7,173 people in 2,584 households and 1,969 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.81 percent white, 1.85 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian and 20.35 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.34 percent were descended from two or more races. 44.00 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,584 households, 39.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers and 23.8 percent were non-families. 21.7 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.18 people.
29.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,591 , and the median income for a family was $ 34,021. Males had a median income of $ 31,140 versus $ 18,967 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,725. 14.4 percent of families and 18.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
