The Atascosa County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Jourdanton .
geography
The county is located in southeast Texas and has an area of 3,200 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bexar County , Wilson County , Karnes County , Live Oak County , McMullen County , La Salle County , Frio County, and Medina Counties .
history
Atascosa County was formed from parts of Bexar County on January 25, 1856, with Navatasco as the first county seat. The administrative organization was terminated on August 4th of the same year. The county was named after the Atascosa River , whose name goes back to the Spanish term for "swampy".

As of the 2000 census , Atascosa County had 38,628 people in 12,816 households and 10,022 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.23 percent white, 0.60 percent African American, 0.80 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.06 percent from the Pacific island area and 21.53 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 58.56 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,816 households, 41.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.3 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers and 21.8 percent were non-families. 18.9 percent were single households and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.41 people.
31.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,081 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,705. Males had a median income of $ 27,702 versus $ 18,810 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,276. 16.1 percent of families and 20.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
