The Frio County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Pearsall .

geography

The county is located south of the geographic center of Texas and, with its southwestern border, is about 70 km from Mexico . It has an area of ​​2938 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Medina County , Atascosa County , La Salle County, and Zavala County .

history

Frio County was formed on February 1, 1858 from parts of Atascosa County, Bexar County, and Uvalde County. The administrative organization was completed on July 20, 1871. It was named after the Frio River , whose name is derived from the Spanish frio (German: "cold").

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 26, 2019, the Old Frio County Jail .

According to the 2000 census , Frio County had 16,252 people in 4,743 households and 3,642 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.86 percent white, 4.87 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 0.41 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 19.76 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.50 percent were descended from two or more races. 73.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,743 households, 40.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.2 percent were married couples living together, 16.0 percent were single mothers and 23.2 percent were non-families. 20.6 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.44 people.

28.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.2 percent between 18 and 24, 30.8 percent between 25 and 44, 18.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 121.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 130.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 24,504 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,578. Males had a median income of $ 23,810 versus $ 16,498 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,069. 24.5 percent of families and 29.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
