The Willacy County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Raymondville .
geography
The county is located in southwest Texas, borders the Gulf of Mexico to the east and has an area of 2031 square kilometers, of which 486 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kenedy County , Cameron County, and Hidalgo Counties .
history
Willacy County was formed in 1911 from parts of Cameron County and Hidalgo County. It was named after John G. Willacy , a farmer and senator from Texas who was instrumental in the formation of the county.

According to the 2000 census , Willacy County had 20,082 people in 5,584 households and 4,584 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.37 percent white, 2.19 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 24.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.34 percent were descended from two or more races. 85.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,584 households, 42.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 62.1 percent were married couples living together, 16.1 percent were single mothers and 17.9 percent were non-families. 16.5 percent were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.40 and the average family size was 3.85 people.
31.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.9 percent between 18 and 24, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 105.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 104.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,114 , and the median income for a family is $ 25,076. Males had a median income of $ 19,706 versus $ 15,514 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,421. 29.2 percent of families and 33.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
