The county is located in northern Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2362 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise in Oklahoma by the following counties: Ellis Counties and Roger Mills Counties , in Texas: Wheeler Counties , Roberts Counties , and Lipscomb Counties .

history

Hemphill County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County . The administrative organization was completed in July 1887. It was named after John Hemphill (1803-1862), an officer in the Second Seminole War , judge on the Supreme Court of Texas , the highest court of the state and senator . In 1861 Hemphill was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress .

One place in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 24, 2019), the Battle of Lyman's Wagon Train , which was the scene of the Red River War .

As of the 2000 census , Hemphill County had 3,351 people in 1,280 households and 948 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.65 percent white, 1.55 percent African American, 0.72 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.48 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.31 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
