Canadian is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Hemphill County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in north Texas, in the northeast of the Texas Panhandle , in the east about 40 km, in the north about 50 km from Oklahoma , on US Highways 60 and 83 , in the west of the county on the south bank of the Canadian River , shortly before the confluence of the Red Deer Creek and has a total area of ​​3.3 km² without any significant water surface.

history

Canadian has been the county seat since its inception in 1887. The city was created in the spring of the same year by the Kansas Railway Townsite Company's supply depot and by the construction of a bridge over the Canadian River by the Southern Kansas Railway . As a result, many people moved to this side of the river, as they had better transport links and expected better business.

On August 4, 1888, one of Texas’s first rodeo was held here and has been the annual venue for national competitions ever since.

According to the 2000 census, 2233 people lived here in 869 households and 625 families. The population density was 668.3 inhabitants per km ².
