Canadian is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Hemphill County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in north Texas, in the northeast of the Texas Panhandle , in the east about 40 km, in the north about 50 km from Oklahoma , on US Highways 60 and 83 , in the west of the county on the south bank of the Canadian River , shortly before the confluence of the Red Deer Creek and has a total area of 3.3 km² without any significant water surface.
history
Canadian has been the county seat since its inception in 1887. The city was created in the spring of the same year by the Kansas Railway Townsite Company's supply depot and by the construction of a bridge over the Canadian River by the Southern Kansas Railway . As a result, many people moved to this side of the river, as they had better transport links and expected better business.
On August 4, 1888, one of Texas’s first rodeo was held here and has been the annual venue for national competitions ever since.

According to the 2000 census, 2233 people lived here in 869 households and 625 families. The population density was 668.3 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 88.94% White, 0.22% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 9.00% other ethnic groups. About 0.90% were mixed race and 18.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 869 households, 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9% of these were married couples living together. 7.6% were single mothers and 28.0% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.04.
27.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2% 18 to 24, 26.8% 25 to 44, 22.9% 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 91.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 87.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,929 USD , and the median income for a family 38,676 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,240 versus $ 17,083 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,384. 14.1% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. 19.4% of these were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.4% were 65 or older.
