Roger Mills County is an administrative unit in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The population is 3,436 and the county seat is Cheyenne .

history

Roger Q. Mills

Roger Mills County was named after Roger Q. Mills , a prominent Texas politician who represented the state in both houses of the US Congress. The district capital of Cheyenne was the site of the Battle of Washita , in which George Armstrong Custer attacked Chief Black Kettle on November 26, 1868 with the 7th US Cavalry .

Large natural gas and oil reservoirs were discovered in and around Roger Mills County in the 1970s . Research revealed that it is the largest natural gas deposit in the United States - between 1973 and 1993, around 230 million cubic meters of natural gas were produced. Furthermore, the largest sources of helium in the world, which are still known today, are located here .

The county has a National Historic Site , the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site , which commemorates the attack on Washita . Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 19, 2018).

Roger Mills County is on the Texas border . The Canadian River forms the northern border of Roger Mills County. The Washita River crosses the district from west to east, passing through Cheyenne and Strong City.
