The Wheeler County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . In 2000 , the county had 5,284 residents and a population density of 2 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Wheeler .

The county is located in northern Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , borders Oklahoma to the east and has an area of 2371 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hemphill Counties , Roger Mills Counties , and Beckham Counties in Oklahoma, Collingsworth Counties , and Gray Counties .
history
Wheeler County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County . It was named after Royall Tyler Wheeler , 2nd chairman of the Texas Supreme Court.

Wheeler County's population was 5,284 as of the 2000 census . 134 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,152 households and 1,487 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.8 percent white, 2.8 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian, 0.1 percent from the Pacific island area and 6.6 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.3 percent were from two or more races. 12.6 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,152 households, 29.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 30.9 percent were non-families. 29.1 percent were single households and 16.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94 people.
25.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 13.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 103.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 103.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,029 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,989. Males had a median income of $ 26,790 versus $ 19,091 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,083. 11.6 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
