The Lee County is a county in the US state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Giddings .

geography

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas, about halfway to the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​1,642 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Milam County , Burleson County , Washington County , Fayette County , Bastrop County, and Williamson County .

history

Lee County was formed in 1874 from parts of Bastrop County, Burleson County, Fayette County, and Washington County. It was named after Robert E. Lee , the commanding general of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War.

Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 15, 2020, the Lee County Courthouse (Texas) , the Droemer Brickyard Site and the Schubert House .

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 15,657 people in 5,663 households and 4,150 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.59 percent white, 12.08 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.87 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.19 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,663 households, 35.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15 people.

28.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 98 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 36,280 , and the median income for a family was $ 42,073. Males had a median income of $ 30,635 versus $ 21,611 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,163. 9.7 percent of families and 11.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
