Giddings is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Lee County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in the south of the county on US Highway 290 and US Highway 77 , about 80 km east of Austin and 165 km west of Houston in southeastern Texas and has a total area of 13.4 km², of which 0.1 km² is water is.
history
The place was founded in 1871 when the Houston and Texas Central Railway laid their tracks here. The place was named either after Jabez Deming Giddings , a major shareholder of the railway, or after Dewitt C. Giddings .

According to the 2000 census, 5,105 people lived here in 1,639 households and 1,125 families. The population density was 382.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 65.99% White, 13.26% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 16.47% other ethnic groups. About 3.19% were mixed race and 34.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,639 households, 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.8% of these were married couples living together. 11.4% were single mothers and 31.3% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.39 people.
