The Medina County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Hondo .
geography
The county is located south of the geographic center of Texas and about 70 km from Mexico in the southwest . It has an area of 3456 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Bandera County , Bexar County , Atascosa County , Frio County, and Uvalde Counties .
history
Medina County was formed in 1848 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after the Medina River , whose name goes back to the Spanish scholar and engineer Pedro Medina. Alonso de León (1584–1652) used the maps he published for his voyages of discovery in this region.
Seven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 18, 2020, including the Castroville Historic District , Devine Opera House, and D'Hanis Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , there were 39,304 people in 12,880 households and 10,136 families in Medina County. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.38 percent white, 2.20 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 14.48 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 45.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,880 households, 39.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 63.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers and 21.3 percent were non-families. 18.2 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.30 people.
29.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 105.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 104.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,063 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,288. Males had a median income of $ 27,045 versus $ 21,734 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,210. 12.0 percent of families and 15.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
