The Hartley County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Channing .

geography

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle , on the New Mexico border and about 25 miles from the Oklahoma border. It has an area of ​​3790 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dallam County , Moore County , Oldham County, and in New Mexico by Quay Counties and Union Counties .

history

Hartley County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County . The administrative organization was completed on February 9, 1891. It was named after the brothers Oliver Cromwell Hartley (1823-1859) and Rufus K. Hartley . Oliver Cromwell served as an officer in the Mexican-American War and was then a publicist on court decisions at the Texas Supreme Court, the highest court in the state. In 1850 he published a collection of laws. For the next two years he was a member of the State Legislature . Rufus K. was, like his brother, a rapporteur at the Texas Supreme Court from 1846 to 1859.

Four structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of July 13, 2019, including the Hartley County Courthouse and Jail .

According to the 2000 census , Hartley County had 5,537 people in 1,604 households and 1,220 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.07 percent white, 8.15 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 13.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,604 households, 35.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 68.9 percent were married couples living together, 4.7 percent were single mothers and 23.9 percent were non-families. 21.6 percent were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

20.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 4.7 percent between 18 and 24, 35.7 percent between 25 and 44, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 154.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 172.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,327 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,004. Males had a median income of $ 29,783 versus $ 21,783 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,067. 3.7 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
