The Deaf Smith County is a county in the US state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Hereford .
geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle and borders the state of New Mexico to the west . It has an area of 3878 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Oldham County , Randall County , Castro County, and Parmer Counties . In New Mexico to the following counties: Curry County and Quay County .
history
Deaf Smith County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and the administrative organization with LaPlata as its headquarters on December 1, 1890 was completed. It was named after Erastus “Deaf Smith” (1787-1837), who served as a scout under Sam Houston and fought for the Texas Rangers during the Texas Revolution . He was the first to reach the Alamo after it fell.

Two structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 23, 2018, the Glenrio Historic District and the EB Black House .

According to the 2000 census , Deaf Smith County had 18,561 people in 6,180 households and 4,832 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.28 percent white, 1.51 percent African American, 0.80 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.13 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 22.92 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 57.40 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,180 households, 41.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers and 21.8 percent were non-families. 19.7 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.41 people.
33.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44, 19.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,601 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,391. Males had a median income of $ 26,090 versus $ 19,113 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,119. 19.3 percent of families and 20.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
