The Menard County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Menard .

geography

The county is located near the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​2,337 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Concho County , McCulloch County , Mason County , Kimble County, and Schleicher County .

history

Menard County was formed from parts of Bexar County on January 22, 1858 , and the administrative organization was completed on May 8, 1871. It was named after Michel Branamour Menard (1803-1856), a French-Canadian trader, signatory of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas and a member of the State Legislature .

Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 18, 2020, the Fort McKavett Historic District , the Menard County Courthouse and the Site of Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas .

According to the 2000 census , Menard County had 2,360 people in 990 households and 665 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.54 percent white, 0.51 percent African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 9.79 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 990 households, 28.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, and 32.8 percent were non-families. 30.4 percent were single households and 17.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91 people.

24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 5.3 percent between 18 and 24, 21.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,762 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,872. Males had a median income of $ 21,953 versus $ 20,000 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,987. 20.0 percent of families and 25.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
