The Smith County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Tyler . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Texas, in the east about 60 km from Louisiana , in the northeast about 70 km from Arkansas and has an area of 2,459 square kilometers, of which 55 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Wood County , Upshur County , Gregg County , Rusk County , Cherokee County , Henderson County, and Van Zandt Counties .
history
Smith County was formed in 1846 from parts of Nacogdoches County . It was named after James Smith , a general during the Texas Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Smith County had 174,706 people in 65,692 households and 46,904 families. The population density was 73 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.61 percent white, 19.06 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.44 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 65,692 households, 33.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers and 28.6 percent were non-families. 24.7 percent were single households and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.10 people.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 87.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 37,148 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,534. Males had a median income of $ 32,451 versus $ 22,351 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,072. 10.2 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
