The Smith County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Tyler . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Texas, in the east about 60 km from Louisiana , in the northeast about 70 km from Arkansas and has an area of ​​2,459 square kilometers, of which 55 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Wood County , Upshur County , Gregg County , Rusk County , Cherokee County , Henderson County, and Van Zandt Counties .

history

Smith County was formed in 1846 from parts of Nacogdoches County . It was named after James Smith , a general during the Texas Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Smith County had 174,706 people in 65,692 households and 46,904 families. The population density was 73 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.61 percent white, 19.06 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.44 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
