The Colorado County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Columbus .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 100 km off the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​2522 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Austin County , Wharton County , Jackson County , Lavaca County, and Fayette County .

history

Colorado County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after the Colorado River .

As of the 2000 census , Colorado County had 20,390 people in 7,641 households and 5,402 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.79 percent white, 14.80 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 19.74 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,641 households, 31.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.9 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.08 people.

25.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 23.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,425 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,388. Males had a median income of $ 30,063 versus $ 20,014 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,910. 12.3 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
