The Terry County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is brownfield . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas, is about 25 miles to the east from the eastern border of New Mexico , and has an area of 2308 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hockley County , Lynn County , Dawson County , Gaines County, and Yoakum County .
history
Terry County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Benjamin Franklin Terry , a Confederate Army colonel and commander of the 8th Texas Cavalry.

As of the 2000 census , Terry County had 12,761 people in 4,278 households and 3,247 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.55 percent white, 5.00 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 14.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 44.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,278 households, 35.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers and 24.1 percent were non-families. 22.1 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.23 people.
28.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 108 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 109.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,090 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,339. Males had a median income of $ 24,321 versus $ 20,131 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,860. 19.2 percent of families and 23.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
